my 1st post 2In the beginning, a scooter was nothing more than a child’s toy with an engine affixed. Uncomplicated, somewhat dangerous, and quite often unreliable, the first scooter bore a greater resemblance to prehistoric G0-Ped prototypes than to the full-bodied, sit-down models that came later. Scooters managed to carve their niche in the marketplace by delivering in times of hardship. Even though they owe much of their lineage to war, economic depression, and urban overcrowding, scooters still slipped into the hands of those simply looking for a joy ride.
An idea had been hatched for a type of vehicle that was not a motorcycle or an automobile or a bicycle, but one that combined the assets of each. Scooters offered the open-aired freedom and adventure of a motorcycle, the lightweight ease and efficient simplicity of a bicycle, and a skinned, polished, and painted veneer of an automobile, all in an affordable package. As the years progressed and technology advanced, scooters evolved from simply practical and economical to beautiful and powerful. Never lost in this evolution was the scooter’s key attraction-fun-even though the circumstances that led to sales booms were not always such: from Chapter 1 Scooters (Red Eyes White Walls & Blue Smoke) By Colin Shattuck with Eric Peterson
